The eighth ASEAN Power Outlook (AEO8) unveiled through the forty second ASEAN Ministers on Power Assembly (AMEM) and the twenty fourth ASEAN Power Enterprise Discussion board (AEBF-24) in Vientiane, Lao PDR revealed

Developed by the ASEAN Centre for Power (ACE) in collaboration with the ASEAN Member States (AMS) and its companions, AEO8 performs a pivotal function in supporting the ASEAN Plan of Motion for Power Cooperation (APAEC). It presents an in-depth evaluation of the area’s power panorama, outlining potential pathways to satisfy nationwide and regional power targets as much as 2050. The international locations which can be a part of the ASEAN are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam

In his handle, H.E. Phosay Sayasone, Lao PDR’s Minister of Power and Mines, emphasised the importance of AEO8, noting that “this report not only aligns with our national objectives but also reinforces ASEAN’s shared vision for sustainable development.” As ASEAN Chairman, Lao PDR regards AEO8 as a key information in steering the area towards a resilient and sustainable power future.

The AEO8 builds upon the findings of the seventh ASEAN Power Outlook (AEO7) and expands its projections throughout varied power sectors, masking areas from electrical energy to power effectivity. It marks an effort to align ASEAN’s power ambitions with the rising international demand for decarbonization and carbon neutrality. ACE’s Appearing Govt Director, Beni Suryadi, highlighted the rising urgency for a coordinated regional effort to handle ASEAN’s rising power wants.

He famous that by 2050, the area’s power demand is predicted to rise 2.6 instances in comparison with 2022, which underscores the significance of transitioning to cleaner power sources whereas sustaining financial development.

AEO8 presents 4 distinct situations to account for the various power wants of ASEAN Member States. These embody:

  • Baseline State of affairs (BAS), which assumes no further efforts on power effectivity or renewable power,
  • AMS Goal State of affairs (ATS), which outlines the potential outcomes of present nationwide insurance policies.
  • Regional Aspiration State of affairs (RAS), which focuses on least-cost optimization inside the energy sector.
  • Carbon Neutrality State of affairs (CNS), which tasks a pathway to decarbonization by means of the adoption of low-emission applied sciences.

The outlook gives insights into power developments within the area, noting that the trade and transport sectors will proceed to dominate power consumption, with coal and oil being the first sources. By 2050, ultimate power demand is predicted to develop considerably. The report signifies that, beneath present insurance policies, ASEAN may obtain a 39.6% share of renewable power in put in energy capability by 2025, surpassing its targets.

Rising applied sciences, reminiscent of nuclear energy and sustainable fuels like hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Gas (SAF), are anticipated to turn into a part of the area’s power combine from the 2030s onward.

The report underscores the potential for job creation in international locations just like the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia, largely pushed by large-scale renewable power tasks. Land use for renewable power, notably for photo voltaic and wind tasks, is projected to extend, with Vietnam and the Philippines anticipated to account for a good portion of this growth, and likewise highlights country-specific projections, as follows:

  • As of 2022, clear cooking entry charge would require extra effort to attain full penetration by 2030, with Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and the Philippines having but to attain 50%.
  • Reflecting AMS’ Energy Improvement Plans (PDP) and targets, nuclear power would exist in all situations besides the BAS, from 2035 onwards, with the very best provide projected to be round 13.8 Mtoe within the ATS by 2050. This means the AMS’ resolute dedication to increasing nuclear power, particularly within the Philippines.
  • Nations such because the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia emerge as main contributors to job creation beneath the RAS, primarily attributable to large-scale RE tasks.
  • The elevated land use throughout all situations is attributed to accelerated  set up capacities, pushed by enabling insurance policies carried out by Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Our RAS evaluation reveals that photo voltaic and wind may require 5 million Ha by 2050, principally in Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
  • Vietnam is predicted to expertise the biggest influence on land use for renewable power, notably for wind and solar energy, with 3 million hectares devoted by 2050. The Philippines will account for 12%, whereas Thailand and Lao PDR will contribute 9% every.

The AEO8 serves as an important useful resource for ASEAN Member States, offering detailed projections and situations that inform decision-making on power safety, accessibility, and sustainability. As ASEAN navigates the complexities of the worldwide power transition, the report affords steerage on addressing regional challenges and fulfilling each nationwide and regional power targets.
